Figures like OpenAI's Sam Altman and Elon Musk have frequently forecasted its arrival. Yet, these predictions have been circulating for over five decades without materializing. That trend of overpromising and underdelivering demonstrates a critical truth—AGI isn't as close as some might fear. Current AI approaches, particularly those leveraging chatbots and scaling up models, lack the sophistication required for true general intelligence.

Shifting focus toward genuine, tangible risks is not about dismissing AGI as an eventual possibility. It’s about addressing problems that are already affecting lives today. Overestimating AI's capabilities while ignoring its misuse magnifies its harm at the expense of creating productive solutions.


Unintentional Misuse: Human Over-Reliance

A major risk of AI today stems from humans over-relying on its outputs in areas where precision and accountability are critical. Take the legal field as one example. Lawyers have used tools like ChatGPT to draft filings, unwittingly including nonexistent citations fabricated by the AI. This has led to sanctions—and highlights AI's limitations in verifying factual accuracy.

If professionals across disciplines misplace their trust in AI, the repercussions extend far beyond the judicial system. Are we comfortable letting flawed outputs decide consequential matters, like loan approvals, medical diagnostics, or social services? What systems could hold these tools accountable before they do damage?


Deliberate Misuse: Exploitation and Harm

Intentional exploitation of AI is growing just as fast as unintentional misuse. Tools designed to enhance creativity, such as image-generation algorithms, have been weaponized for harm. A vivid example includes the creation of non-consensual deepfake content, such as explicit images of public figures. The rise of open-source tools for deepfake creation only exacerbates the risks by lowering the barriers to entry for bad actors.

This isn't merely a celebrity or privacy issue. Deepfakes and manipulated media could destabilize public trust in evidence altogether. How should societies protect citizens from these? And what responsibility do companies bear when their tools are used for destructive purposes?


The "Liar’s Dividend": A New Safeguard for Deception

The "liar's dividend" represents a particularly troubling form of AI misuse. It enables individuals to deny wrongdoing—even with clear evidence—by claiming said evidence is fake. This tactic has already cropped up in notable cases, such as defendants in the January 6 Capitol riots alleging video evidence was fabricated deepfake content.

In a world inundated with fake images and videos, the liar’s dividend creates a paradox: proving authenticity becomes harder even when technology provides rigorously documented proof. The question becomes this: how can systems of law, governance, and public accountability adapt to handle bad actors exploiting distrust itself?


Mistakenly Labeling Bad Products as "AI"

Some companies intentionally amplify market confusion by branding dubious, ineffective products as “AI.” Hiring tools serve as a notable example. These tools apply superficial correlations—like a candidate's college or location—to assess suitability, despite their lack of predictive reliability. By hiding discrimination and flawed criteria beneath the label of advanced technology, businesses misuse AI to impose harm.

This raises a critical point: should regulatory bodies impose stricter definitions on how terms like “AI” are marketed to prevent misuse? And how do we, as a society, educate consumers to probe these claims intelligently?


Life-Changing Decisions Made by Algorithms

AI systems affecting high-stakes decisions come with grave risks. For instance, the Dutch government used a flawed algorithm that flagged thousands of parents for welfare fraud. Many were wrongly accused, resulting in lost benefits and irreparable harm. This scandal ultimately led to the resignation of the Prime Minister and his cabinet.

When algorithms are allowed to automate decisions at scale, even minor flaws can have devastating, widespread effects. How can governments ensure oversight of these systems? And what processes should exist for holding developers accountable for decisions their algorithms make?


Misuse, Not Superintelligence, Is the Real Risk

The fears surrounding AI should focus less on scenarios of rogue superintelligent entities and more on actual misuses happening today. Misuse—whether unintentional, malicious, or institutional—already impacts individuals, communities, and economies. Reckoning with these risks requires prioritizing collaboration among stakeholders, from businesses to governments to civil society.

The year 2025 will not bring us sentient machines plotting humanity’s demise. It will, however, hold greater challenges in preventing misuse of AI tools that wield enormous real-world influence. Addressing these immediate concerns head-on, transparently, and thoughtfully is not just a technical issue but a moral imperative.
