“Rafah under Fire: Thousands Dead, Humanitarian Crisis Unfolds in Gaza”

 May 31, 2024

By  Joe Habscheid

Summary: Israel's military operation in Rafah, a city in the Gaza Strip, has been ongoing since May 6, 2024. The operation has resulted in significant civilian casualties and humanitarian crises. Here are the key developments:

Initial Events

On May 6, Israel initiated targeted ground operations in Rafah, prompting the evacuation of over 1.5 million Palestinians to the city from other areas in Gaza. The Rafah border crossing with Egypt was seized by Israel and subsequently closed, blocking humanitarian aid and supplies from entering Gaza.

Escalation and Casualties

The military operations in Rafah have led to a significant increase in casualties. Over 36,000 Palestinians have been killed in the conflict, with the majority being civilians. The city's population has dwindled to approximately 500,000 due to continuous bombardment, with many displaced people seeking shelter in makeshift tents and schools. The last hospital in Rafah is under threat due to the ongoing Israeli incursion, which could lead to a complete collapse of the city's healthcare system.

International Response

The United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting on May 28, with Algeria proposing a draft resolution to halt Israel's assault on Rafah. The International Court of Justice ordered Israel to stop its military offensive in Rafah on May 24, but this order is not enforceable. The United States has been closely monitoring the situation, with Vice President Kamala Harris calling the recent events "tragic" and "devastating." However, the US has not halted its military aid to Israel.

Humanitarian Crisis

The humanitarian situation in Rafah is dire, with over 1 million people having fled the city. The Rafah crossing, which is crucial for delivering aid, remains closed. The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the ongoing incursion could lead to a complete collapse of healthcare services in Rafah. Doctors Without Borders has reported that the city is experiencing a severe shortage of medical supplies, food, and fuel, making it difficult to sustain lifesaving operations.

Recent Events

On May 26, an Israeli airstrike on a tent camp in Tal Al-Sultan killed at least 45 people and injured many more. On May 28, another airstrike on a tent camp in Al-Mawasi killed 21 people and injured 64.

International Criticism

The international community has strongly condemned Israel's actions in Rafah, with many countries calling for a ceasefire. Saudi Arabia has accused Israel of committing "genocide massacres" in the city. The hashtag #AllEyesOnRafah has been trending on social media, highlighting the dire situation in the city and the need for international attention and action.
