Nintendo Switch 2 Pre-Order Delays: Tariffs Shake Up U.S. and Canada Release Strategy

 April 13, 2025

By  Joe Habscheid

Summary: Economic disruptions due to newly imposed tariffs by the Trump administration led Nintendo to delay the U.S. and Canadian pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2. Originally, pre-orders were planned to begin on April 9, 2025, but were rescheduled to May 8, 2025, to allow time for assessing financial impacts. The planned release date of June 5 remains unchanged.

The decision to delay pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. and Canada came after potential price implications from tariff changes. With a tariff base of 10% and the suspension of a 25% reciprocal tariff increase for 75 countries, the U.S. market faced financial uncertainties. Notably, China’s tariffs increased to 125%, significantly affecting Nintendo’s plans there, although the primary focus remains on the U.S. and Canada.

Analysts in the U.S. feared that consumers might face an increased price of approximately $560, compared to the initially planned price of $449.99. With economic uncertainties looming, Nintendo chose to delay pre-orders to carefully evaluate whether to absorb these costs or pass them on to consumers.

Retailer Response

Major retail chains such as Best Buy, Walmart, and Target were well into preparations for pre-order rollouts. However, the unexpected delay forced many of these retailers to adapt their strategies quickly. Nintendo’s directive was clear: Avoid early retailer drops and ensure pre-orders are controlled centrally. This move aimed to maintain a consistent rollout strategy amidst unpredictable tariff-induced price shifts.

Priority System

In response to the delay, Nintendo established a priority system for pre-orders in the U.S. and Canada. Consumers meeting specific criteria are being prioritized. These criteria include having at least 12 months of Nintendo Switch Online membership, consenting to share gameplay data with Nintendo, and possessing a minimum of 50 gameplay hours. Starting on May 8, 2025, invitation emails are being sent to eligible buyers, allowing for a 72-hour window to complete their purchase.

Launch Context

Despite these changes, the release date of June 5, 2025, remains unchanged. However, potential adjustments in pricing for the console (e.g., $449.99 standalone or $499.99 bundled with Mario Kart World) and accessories such as the Joy-Con 2 ($79.99) are yet to be finalized.

With logistical challenges posed by the tariffs, retailer partnerships play an essential role. For instance, Walmart aims to guarantee delivery by 9 AM on launch day, while Amazon’s participation remains uncertain.

Understanding these challenges surrounding the Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order and launch phase offers insight into global market interactions influenced by geopolitical decisions. The interplay of economics and consumer technology presents a storyline where innovation meets policy and market forces.
