AI Security Is Broken—This Startup Just Raised $20M to Fix It

Summary: Edera, a security startup led by three female founders, has developed groundbreaking cloud workload isolation technology designed to protect AI-powered infrastructure. By addressing long-standing security vulnerabilities in shared cloud environments, particularly in GPU-dependent AI systems, Edera’s solution could redefine how modern computing safeguards critical applications. With strong venture backing and a mission to challenge industry norms, Edera exemplifies innovation in both technology and leadership.

Rethinking Security for AI and the Cloud

Security in cloud computing has always been a challenge, but as artificial intelligence rapidly scales, the need for stronger protections has become more pressing. AI workloads require high-performance GPUs, which operate differently from traditional CPUs. While CPUs prioritize security and multitasking, GPUs are engineered for speed and efficiency—often at the cost of built-in security boundaries. This trade-off leaves shared cloud infrastructure vulnerable, allowing attackers to exploit weaknesses and gain unauthorized access.

Edera’s approach is designed to remove this risk. By creating advanced isolation between cloud workloads, the company provides a way for businesses to protect applications running on shared infrastructure without sacrificing performance. What makes this technology especially significant is its potential to be applied universally across cloud environments, ensuring that even the most complex AI operations remain secure.

From IoT Security to AI Protection

Edera’s journey began with Alex Zenla, one of the company’s three co-founders. In the mid-2010s, Zenla, then a teen working on securing IoT (Internet-of-Things) devices, noticed a fundamental weakness. Unlike traditional computing systems, IoT devices often relied on small, resource-limited chips that couldn’t support conventional cloud protections. This left them more exposed to attacks, with no reliable way to isolate them from broader networks.

Recognizing that cloud-based containers could offer a solution, Zenla spent years refining an approach that could enable nearly any device to run securely within its own isolated virtual space. A decade later, this concept evolved into Edera’s vision for cloud security—now focused on AI infrastructure and container security.

Security Without Trade-offs

The traditional approach to cloud and AI security forces businesses to make compromises. Organizations either accept lower performance for better security or prioritize speed and efficiency while leaving systems exposed. Edera’s co-founders—Zenla, CEO Emily Long, and Ariadne Conill—reject that choice entirely. Their technology aims to bring strong isolation without degrading performance.

“People were too willing to accept trade-offs that were not actually acceptable,” Zenla explains. When an attacker breaches one part of a shared cloud system, they often gain access to adjacent resources, leading to large-scale security failures. Edera’s solution prevents this by isolating workloads with robust barriers, ensuring that even if an attacker infiltrates part of a system, they can’t move laterally to other critical assets.

The Startup’s Rapid Growth and Funding Success

In an era where securing venture capital has become increasingly difficult, Edera stands out. The company secured $5 million in seed funding, followed by a $15 million Series A led by Microsoft’s venture fund, M12. This rapid funding is especially significant given the industry’s ongoing struggles with economic uncertainty and investor caution.

Beyond the technology itself, Edera’s leadership team is breaking barriers. The company is entirely led by women, including two trans women—an extremely rare achievement in both tech and venture-funded enterprises. Historically, female founders receive far less investment than their male counterparts. Those who do secure initial funding face an uphill battle when raising subsequent rounds, and systemic bias often limits opportunities for women to build multiple companies over their careers.

The Bigger Fight: Inclusion and Representation in Tech

Despite the success, Edera’s founders are acutely aware of the broader challenges they face. “We can’t ignore the fact that we are a small minority in our industry, and that a lot of the changes that are happening around us are not lifting us up,” Long says.

The larger tech industry is undergoing dramatic shifts, with many diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives facing political and corporate opposition. The result is a shrinking space for underrepresented groups to receive funding, mentorship, and leadership opportunities. Despite these challenges, Edera is proving that technical excellence and strong leadership can break through resistance.

Their presence alone has already inspired action. “Since our founding, I can’t tell you how many incredibly technical, talented women have proactively asked us to hire them from large institutions,” says Long. Just by existing and succeeding, they are opening new doors.

Engineering a More Secure Future

While Edera’s founders take on these broader industry battles, their core mission remains sharply focused: transforming how cloud infrastructure protects sensitive applications. By making cloud workload isolation easier for IT teams to deploy and maintain, they want to ensure companies no longer have to suffer major breaches caused by weak container security.

“People have legacy applications in their infrastructure and use end-of-life software,” Long explains. “There’s no way to do security and believe that you can always patch every existing vulnerability.” Businesses need strong, built-in safeguards, and Edera believes that their technology finally provides that foundation.

As AI continues to shape industries, securing its infrastructure is vital. Edera is positioning itself at the center of that movement—both as an innovator in cloud security and as a transformational force in tech leadership.
